Fabian Oefner is a Swiss investigator, photographer and artist, whose work moves between the fields of art and science. . . . Basically he does awesome stuff with paint and bubbles and a super fast shutter speed.
Take a look at his website for more photos and experiments here but if you're too lazy for that then I have a round up of my favourites here.
Black hole
Various shades of acrylic paint are dripped onto a metallic rod, which is connected to a drill. When switched on, the paint starts to move away from the rod, creating these amazing looking structures.
These are my favourite- the photos here don't do them justice though so take a look at his website- they make me think of space and stars and black holes.
Dancing colours
Mounted a thin plastic foil on top of the membrane of a common loud speaker he then adds hundreds of colorful, tiny crystals onto the foil.
Each time a sound is played through the speaker, the vibration caused will make the crystals jump up and down forming these peculiar looking forms and figures. Depending on the frequency, pitch and volume of the tone, the figures change their appearance.
These make me think of sweets- millions or hundreds and thousands. . . . Or cheetos.
Liquid jewel
The structures you see are modeling balloons covered with paint right after they have been pricked with a needle. The air inside the balloon expands explosively, throwing the paint in all different directions.
I love how you can see the paint merging together and running into each other.
Millefiori
The shapes, you see in these image are only about the size of a thumbnail. They are created with the aid of a very peculiar material: ferrofluid.
This liquid has a very unique property. It is magnetic, caused by the millions nano iron particles in it. When put under a magnetic field, the particles in the solution start to rearrange due to the attraction and repulsion of iron.
I love the blue and yellow photo- It reminds me of images of the Great Barrier Reef from above.
